MTV Awards 2021 – Full Recap And List Of Winners

The 2021 MTV Awards held on September 12th was a star-studded affair filled with exciting performances and winners throughout the night. An electric event hosted by Doja Cat was filled from top to bottom with energy and entertainment value to cap a memorable event celebrating the network’s 40th anniversary.

The stars were indeed in attendance – as the likes of Megan Fox, Ed Sheeran, Kourtney Kardashian, Lil Nas X, and Alicia Keys, among many others, were all on the red carpet.

One of the biggest winners of the night was Justin Bieber in his first appearance at the MTV Awards since 2016: who won Artist Of The Year and Best Pop Video for ‘Peaches’ – his awards were two of the most significant awards the night. 18-year-old Olivia Rodrigo took home another of the big awards: Song Of The Year for her single – ‘Drivers Licence.’

When accepting her award, Olivia said the following:

This has been the most magical year of my life and it is all because of you guys

Said Rodrigo while accepting song of the year, dedicating the award to “all of the other girls who write songs on their bedroom floor.

There are a lot of people who will try to dim your light, but speaking your mind and sharing your heart are the most beautiful things in the world.

Cyndi Lauper presented Justin Bieber with his best pop song award – and gave an important message on women’s rights:

I won a moon person at the very first VMAs in 1984. Things are a little different now

Yeah, girls wanna have fun. But we also want to have funds, equal pay, and control over our bodies. You know, fundamental rights.

Billie Eilish continued the message as she won the Video For Good award:

I just want to say that we need to protect our young women at all costs. For real. We also need to remember that we all have power, and we have to remember to not abuse it.

22-year-old Lil Nas X was another one of the big award winners. Winning Video of The Year for Montero (Call Me By Your Name) is one of the best talked about and boundary-pushing videos.

This year, there was much focus on live performances, with much shorter speeches than previous years—performances from Alicia Keys. Justin Bieber, That Kid LAROI, Kacey Musgraves, Ed Sheeran, Kim Petras, Machine Gun Kelly, Olivia Rodrigo, Ozuna, Polo G, Swae Lee, Shawn Mendes, Swedish House Mafia Tainy, Travis Barker, twenty one pilots, Jack Harlow, Camila Cabello, Lil Nas X, Chloe Bailey, Normani and Doja Cat herself, all delivered and gave us a lot to remember from them.

Busta Rhymes closed the show out in style with an impactful performance of hits from Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See to A Tribe Called Quest’s Scenario and MOP’s Ante Up before wrapping up with Pass The Courvoisier. His performance left us all wanting more and was one of the most entertaining performances of the night. Fitting as the awards were held in Brooklyn – where Busta is from.
